Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa
A world-class research facility, the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub, was officially opened in Nairobi on 5 November by Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki. The opening took place at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), which hosts and manages the new facility. FARA was represented at the occasion by Ralph von Kaufmann, Capacity Building Consultant.
The BecA Hub is open for use by researchers from Africa and around the world who are working to improve African agriculture. The Hub puts Africa’s research capacity on par with some of the world’s most advanced research institutes.
Workshops are sometimes good, other times not so good. Place the PSTAD Implementation Review and Planning for SADC countries meeting that took place in Maputo last month in the former category!
Representatives of four countries supported by the African Development Bank – Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zambia – participated in the workshop, along with FARA staff members and other resource persons. The workshop was held in Cardoso Hotel Conference Facilities in Maputo in Mozambique on 25-27 October 2010. Most of the participants were RAILS and DONATA Focal Points.
The workshop was very successful judging by the responses of participants. Most of the issues were clarified and all came to a common understanding on how IPTAs and RAILS learning team are to be established. The main conclusions are available in the workshop proceedings. Click here to view them.
